Champlevé Enamel Letter Opener Approx. 1880
USD 407.60
This magnificent letter opener from the French historicist period, made about 1860-1880, is an exquisite example of the high artistry of French enamel work. The floral and ornamental decor extends across the handle and parts of the blade and shows a harmonious palette of rich cobalt blue, light turquoise, white and dark wine red accents. The fine golden bars that separate the enamel fields form a delicate network of volutes, flower motifs and stylized leaf ornaments that reflect the typical taste of the Neo-Renaissance and Orientalism. Particularly noteworthy is the excellent condition of the enamel, which, despite its age, shows hardly any chips and has retained its original shine. The gilding of the metal base is slightly rubbed, which gives the letter opener an authentic, noble pati.
